Using machine learning to autotune chi-squared tests for gravitational wave searches
نویسندگان
چکیده
The sensitivity of gravitational wave searches is reduced by the presence non-Gaussian noise in detector data. These non-Gaussianities often match well with template waveforms used matched filter searches, and require signal-consistency tests to distinguish them from astrophysical signals. However, empirically tuning these for maximum efficacy time consuming limits complexity tests. In this work we demonstrate a framework use machine-learning techniques automatically tune We implement new $\chi^2$ test targeting large population found intermediate mass black hole binaries, training using set out paper. find that method effectively trains complex model down-weight noise, while leaving signal relatively unaffected. This improves search $\sim 11\%$ signals masses $> 300 M_\odot$. future could be any commonly matched-filter algorithms, further improving our searches.

Chi-Squared Tests in Dual Frame Surveys
In order to obtain better coverage of the population of interest and cost less, a number of surveys employ dual frame structure, in which independent samples are taken from two overlapping sampling frames. This research considers chi-squared tests in dual frame surveys when categorical data is encountered. We extend generalized Wald’s (1943) test, Rao-Scott first-order and second-order correcte...
متن کاملA powerful veto for gravitational wave searches
The use of vetoes generated from auxiliary channels suppresses most of the high amplitude noise triggers that impair gravitational wave (GW) burst and binary inspiral searches. During Virgo’s first scientific run (VSR1), many of the remaining loud burst and inspiral Virgo triggers were observed with nearly equal significance in both the in-phase (ACp) and quadrature (ACq) interferometer output ...
متن کاملFirst Searches for Optical Counterparts to Gravitational-Wave Candidate Events
During the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory and Virgo joint science runs in 2009–2010, gravitational wave (GW) data from three interferometer detectors were analyzed within minutes to select GW candidate events and infer their apparent sky positions. Target coordinates were transmitted to several telescopes for follow-up observations aimed at the detection of an associated op...
متن کاملLow-Frequency Gravitational Wave Searches Using Spacecraft Doppler Tracking
This paper discusses spacecraft Doppler tracking, the current-generation detector technology used in the low-frequency (∼millihertz) gravitational wave band. In the Doppler method the earth and a distant spacecraft act as free test masses with a ground-based precision Doppler tracking system continuously monitoring the earth-spacecraft relative dimensionless velocity 2Δv/c = Δν/ν0, where Δν is ...
متن کاملSliced Inverse Moment Regression Using Weighted Chi-Squared Tests for Dimension Reduction∗
We propose a new class of dimension reduction methods using the first two inverse moments, called Sliced Inverse Moment Regression (SIMR). We develop corresponding weighted chi-squared tests for the dimension of the regression. Basically, SIMR are linear combinations of Sliced Inverse Regression (SIR) and the method using a new candidate matrix which is designed to recover the entire inverse se...
